Preventing and educating against COVID-19

Although a full lockdown has not been implemented in Malawi, since the 23rd March 2020 schools have been closed and gatherings of over 100 people have been banned as a preventative measure amidst the global pandemic of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. Following government advice, we have closed our schools and paused our projects until further notice for the safety of our students, teachers, and the wider community. We are fortunate that we have not had to furlough any of our teachers and are able to continue paying their full salaries during this challenging time.

In order to do our part to tackle the virus, we ran an emergency campaign: our aim was to provide soap, clean running water, and training courses on how to wash hands and prevent the spread of COVID-19. The majority of the women we work with live in overcrowded areas with lack of access to medical facilities, so understanding the principals of hand washing, social distancing and self-isolation – and crucially, having access to the resources with which to practise these measures – is vital in helping to contain and reduce the spread.

With your help, we were able to raise over £500 which in turn has enabled us to distribute 1000 bars of soap, 160 water pails in Lilongwe and Mangochi – bringing running water to half the households in the areas in which we work, and to deliver training to over 400 women (including past students). We would like to take this opportunity to thank all donors for helping to make this campaign a great success!

When safe to do so, we look forward to welcoming back all our women to complete their course with United Amayi. If you would like to learn more about how you can sponsor a woman’s education, please click here.

We hope you are keeping safe and well.
